There is no “one size fits all” answer when it comes to finding the perfect stroller for your dog. Different dogs have different body types and personalities, which means that you need to take a variety of factors into account when choosing the right stroller. In this blog post, we will discuss how to choose the perfect stroller for your dog based on their size. We’ll also provide tips on how to pick the right size stroller for your pet, regardless of their breed or weight!
When it comes to finding the perfect stroller for your dog, there are three main factors to consider: breed, size, and type. Let’s take a closer look at each of these factors.
- How to Measure Your Dog

Breed
A dog’s breed affects not just their size but also their temperament and level of energy. When picking the perfect stroller, it’s a no-brainer that smaller dogs require smaller strollers and bigger dogs require bigger ones. However, we would like to make the following point:
Size – It’s Not Just About the Breed
There are many factors that affect a dog’s size: factors such as their genetics, level of physical activity, diet, and age are all important factors that may affect a dog’s size and weight, which is why dogs of the same breed may have vastly different needs. This translates to needing different types of strollers that would suit each dog better.
How to Measure Your Dog?
To measure your dog, there are 3 measurements you should get:
- Length – the measurement from the tip of the nose to where the tail begins
- Height – the measurement from the top of the head to the bottom of the foot in a sitting position
- Width – the distance between the back feet
How to Check if Your Dog Can Fit in the Stroller?
- To help you in assessing whether your dog(s) can fit in the stroller, follow these steps:
- Get the length and width of the INNER measurements of the stroller you would like to get. [For Ibiyaya, these may be found below, or in the product page of your desired product.]
- Get a towel or a small blanket and fold it into the same dimensions of the length and width of your desired stroller. Getting an illustration board or a white board and drawing the dimensions into a rectangular shape can also work.
- Lay your towel, blanket, or board on a flat surface that can handle your pets’ weight: It can be on the floor, your bed, couch, or even a table, depending on their size and weight.
- Place your pet on the surface. This will give you an idea whether they can lay down comfortably given the dimensions.
NOTE: When using a stroller with multiple pets, it is even more important to do this test, to make sure that each of the pets you will place in the stroller will have the space to move.

Different Types of Dogs in Strollers: What Type is Your Dog?
When it comes to dogs, there are four types of dog types that can be placed in strollers: sprawler, leaner, sitter and curler.
Leaner
Dogs that are considered “leaners” tend to lean their head on the sides and front of the stroller. They like having a view. They are usually half lying down and half leaning. They generally take up less space in a stroller than dogs that are “sprawlers,” so it is important to measure them accurately before purchasing and making sure that they have enough space to lean in the stroller.
Our recommendation: If you have a leaner, choose a stroller with mesh windows that you can roll up or fold.
Sitter
Dogs that are “sitters” tend to sit up, erect, and straight. They generally take up a lot of space in a pet stroller because they like being able to see everything around them. Make sure you consider the height of your dog when sitting and how much space is needed for their head when taking measurements as well as making sure that there is enough room for them to be comfortable.
Our recommendation: Make sure to have a 2” room at the top. Ibiyaya large dog strollers are a perfect for this type of dog.
Curler
Dogs who are considered curlers tend to curl up into a ball and love to cuddle. This means that they have to have enough space in the stroller to curl up and snuggle with their favorite toys while on the trip (you might need to have space for those toys too.
Our recommendation: Have enough room for them to lie down comfortably and curl up. When in doubt, move one size up. If you have playful small dog and a curler, settle with medium-sized stroller or carrier
If you’re still unsure about what kind of dog stroller your dog will need because they’re on the upper limit of what a stroller can handle, always go one size up. Dogs love to nap and take naps on the road while they are being transported by their owners. This is a common reason why we get so many questions regarding how big the strollers are inside and whether or not it can fit certain dogs.
When getting your pooch a stroller, keep in mind that their safety and comfort comes first.
